We have launched the ERA-AREAS project to support and expand the area atudies programs at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University! 🌍 At the end of May, we held the kick-off meeting that marked the start of this five-year initiative, supported by the prestigious ERA Chair scheme under the Horizon Europe programme.
The main goal of the project is to establish the Centre for Multidisciplinary Area Studies (CEMAS) 👉 a new platform for researching current societal developments in non-European regions and for further strengthening the faculty’s international research profile.
🗨️ “Area Studies at the Faculty of Arts have a unique and long-standing tradition built on linguistic, philological, and cultural approaches to research and teaching on non-European regions. Through its research, project-based, and outreach activities, ERA-AREAS will complement this focus with a more integrated humanities and social science framework. Our aim is to support area studies in all their diversity, reflecting the exceptional geographic coverage offered at our faculty,” says Eva Lehečková, Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
The ERA Chair holder is Mariana Llanos, a leading expert on Latin American political systems, also affiliated with the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg and Universität Erfurt. Together with globally renowned scholars representing various regional specialisations in the project’s advisory board, she brings strong expertise in comparative research and area studies.
The project is coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Karel Kouba.
🙏 We warmly thank the members of our international advisory board – Prof. Paul Chaisty (University of Oxford), Dr. Andres Malamud (Universidade de Lisboa), Prof. Anja Osei (Freie Universität Berlin), Prof. Nicola Pratt (University of Warwick), and Prof. Marco Bünte (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg) – for sharing their perspectives on Area Studies and for joining us on this journey.
